From the moment her family fled Uganda under the threats of execution by dictator Idi Amin, she has chosen to step into her life with optimism and purpose. The understanding that even in the midst of terrible misfortune one can heal and find meaning has inspired her commitment to serve women facing some of the world’s most challenging injustices. Amber’s dramatic childhood and conscious choice to live from the heart lit the way to her courageous peace building work in places such as Afghanistan, Darfur, Iraq, Israel and Palestine. She speaks with a unique global voice.
Amber is a visionary entrepreneur who has created successful enterprises that are founded on the feminine principles of compassionate commerce and women's empowerment. Today, she is the Founder of the Womens Peace Collection and Co-Founder of Prosperity Candle, two online social enterprises that offer an international market and support resilient and courageous women from areas devastated by conflict and natural disasters, including Afghanistan, Rwanda and Haiti. Through these enterprises, Amber has given women around the world the opportunity to not only survive, but thrive.
Amber’s mission to celebrate women as a force for peace and prosperity has shaped her eloquent and compassionate global voice. - Amber is the founder of The Women’s Peace Collection, a social enterprise that supports women’s micro-enterprises primarily in regions of conflict and post-conflict. Her company offers high quality, meaningful gifts created by talented craftswomen who are rebuilding their lives in the shadows of war, genocide, civil strife and crippling poverty. The Women’s Peace Collection currently works with artisans in areas such as Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Burma, Cambodia, Israel, Palestine, Colombia, Bolivia, Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan and Nepal.
- She is one of the original architects and designers of the Jerusalem Candle of Hope and Candle of Peace & Prosperity, a remarkable collaboration taking place today between Palestinian and Israeli craftswomen, which supports peace-building initiatives using craft as a symbolic expression for reconciliation.
- Amber launched the 100 Women: 100 Hopes Campaign in Darfur, an initiative that supports women who are struggling in one of the largest refugee camps in Western Darfur to earn a dignified livelihood under extremely challenging circumstance. The Darfur Baskets of Strength and Darfur Peace Baskets created by these women symbolize their hopes for a secure future.
- In 2009 Amber created the Amber Chand Foundation to support her humanitarian work. Her foundation offers women living primarily in areas of conflict and post-conflict micro finance grants to create and grow their enterprises.
- Amber has been widely recognized for her work around the world and for her humanitarian business model. In 2008 she was inducted into the Business Women’s Hall of Fame by Baypath College, her Rwanda journals were published by Marie Claire Magazine, and Inc Magazine voted her entrepreneur of the month.
